چکیده

Characterisation of the pore space in carbonate reservoirs and aquifers is of utmost importance in a number of applications such as enhanced oil recovery, geological carbon storage and contaminant transport. We present a new experimental methodology that uses high-salinity contrast brine and differential imaging acquired by X-ray tomography to non-invasively obtain three-dimensional spatially resolved information on porosity and connectivity of two rock samples, Portland and Estaillades limestones, including subresolution micro-porosity. We demonstrate that by injecting 30 wt% KI brine solution, a sufficiently high phase contrast can be achieved allowing accurate three-phase segmentation based on differential imaging. This results in spatially resolved maps of the solid grain phase, sub-resolution micro-pores within the grains, and macro-pores. The total porosity values from the three-phase segmentation for two carbonate rock samples are shown to be in good agreement with Helium porosity measurements. Furthermore, our flow-based method allows for an accurate estimate of pore connectivity and a distribution of porosity within the sub-resolution pores. © 2016 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Computations of Porosity and Permeability of Sparic Carbonate Using Multi-scale Ct Images

The determination of fluid flow properties in carbonate rocks is strongly affected by heterogeneity. This paper presents a case study that describes the heterogeneity of a carbonate sample. Then, through multi-scale x-ray CT imaging, core panoscopy, a base flow unit in the sample was selected for property computation. Volumes scanned at different resolutions and fields of view that are spatiall...

X-ray microtomography application in pore space reservoir rock.

Characterization of porosity in carbonate rocks is important in the oil and gas industry since a major hydrocarbons field is formed by this lithology and they have a complex media porous. In this context, this research presents a study of the pore space in limestones rocks by x-ray microtomography. Total porosity, type of porosity and pore size distribution were evaluated from 3D high resolutio...

Reconstruction of Pore-space Images Using Microtomography and Multiple-point Statistics

Quantitative prediction of petrophysical properties for reservoir rocks frequently employs representative microscopic models of the pore space as input. Recently digital imaging techniques such as microtomography have been used to provide void space images at the resolution of a few microns. However, this resolution may be insufficient to capture some smaller structures, particularly in carbona...

Reservoir Condition Pore-scale Imaging of Multiple Fluid Phases Using X-ray Microtomography

X-ray microtomography was used to image, at a resolution of 6.6 µm, the pore-scale arrangement of residual carbon dioxide ganglia in the pore-space of a carbonate rock at pressures and temperatures representative of typical formations used for CO2 storage. Chemical equilibrium between the CO2, brine and rock phases was maintained using a high pressure high temperature reactor, replicating condi...

Dynamic three-dimensional pore-scale imaging of reaction in a carbonate at reservoir conditions.

Quantifying CO2 transport and average effective reaction rates in the subsurface is essential to assess the risks associated with underground carbon capture and storage. We use X-ray microtomography to investigate dynamic pore structure evolution in situ at temperatures and pressures representative of underground reservoirs and aquifers. A 4 mm diameter Ketton carbonate core is injected with CO...
